Cold Weather Training

Are You ready for the Frozen Mean Streets?

While most folks are snuggled away indoors watching tactical television or football, the team at Mean Streets Tactical Training are outside working out in the cold weather. Cold weather is an excellent training environment!

Here are a few good reasons to train in cold weather:

The cold simulates stress by slowing your body down similar to an adrenaline dump. Frozen fingers simulate the difficulty using fine motor skills to operate the trigger and work reloads. The cold makes movement clumsy requiring perfect form and balance. The cold also affects your vision as your eyes water or close in the wind.
Dealing with heavy concealment garments and gloves! When carrying concealed you will have to dig out your blaster under various layers of garments. On the range, many people cheat by only practicing using an outside of the pants holster and an unzipped coat. Not so in the real environment where you carry IWB and under 1-2 layers of clothing. Gloves add an entirely different and difficult dimension. Performing the simplest skill is compounded by the clumsy gloves so perfect technique is required.
Stocking hats and headphones simulate audible exclusion in the stress environment.
Gun performance and reliability can be adversely affected by the cold. Guns are slow to cycle and that can lead to malfunctions. Reactive malfunction clearances are extremely important as magazines can fail to fully seat due to the gloves (Type 1), guns can fail to fully cycle (Type 2/3), and one handed manipulations can lead to limp wristing or poor grip (Type 2/3).
Finally, the bad guys don't train in foul weather so it gives you an advantage!

So, get off that couch and get out and train. You will be amazed at what you will learn!

We started "Blaster" here as a puppy and now he is a full blown tactical guard hound. As you can see he even uses concealment during his duties on family overwatch.

Dewalt Tactical Nail Driver

A new Nail Gun, made by Dewalt, has just been introduced for the tactical contruction operator market. It can drive a 16-D nail through a 2 X 4 at 200 yards. This new product makes construction a breeze, you can sit in your lawn chair and build a fence with accuracy not achieved with a manual hammer system.

To operate:

Just get your wife to hold the fence boards in place while you sit back, relax with a cold beer and when she has the board in the right place, just fire away.
With the hundred round magazine, you can build the fence with a minimum of reloading. But when a reload is required, the magazine can be reloaded by the tactical operator in seconds.
After a day of fence building with the new Dewalt Rapid fire nail gun, the wife will not ask you to build or fix anything else again. See will know your tactical construction efficiency and your mastership of your craft.

Advanced Defensive Handgun Combatives

Mean Streets Tactical Training is proud to present our one day Advanced Defensive Handgun Combatives courses. Warriors know that if you train like you fight, you will fight like you train. Therefore the Warrior will make every training session count. These are the types of sessions that Warriors will relish in!

This series of one day training classes will prepare students for the down and dirty world of urban combat. The courses emphasize that the skills used in an armed conflict are different than those used punching holes in paper plates or beer cans: beer cans don’t shoot back. Statistics show that those with a Will to Win at all costs, and a high state of readiness, survive conflict situations.

The series of courses will be delivered in Four separate modules:
Module 1 Speed, Surprise and Violence of Action
Module 2 Zero to Ten Feet Fighting
Module 3 Ground Fighting and Vehicles
Module 4 Structures and Low Light Fighting

These courses will focus on the following Knowledge, Skills, and Attitudes:
Combat Shooting Fundamentals
Tactical Movement
Combat Mindset and the Warrior Spirit
Treating Malfunctions
Target scanning and decision making
Precision tactical shooting under stress
Ground fighting
Fighting to the Sides and Rear
Close Quarters Engagements
Low Light fighting

The classes will use a series of skill builder drills, combined with scenarios, stress inducement, and Force on Force activities to replicate the tactical fighting environment. All exercises are trained from concealed carry for realism. Students will come away from the training with a much higher confidence and competence level and take their preparedness to a new level.

Course Requirements
Previous Defensive Handgun training from MSTT or equivalent
Student must be able to demonstrate on demand the fundamental skills such as presentation from holster, proper use of the front sight, and tactical reloading.
Combat handgun of choice with Kydex or equivalent holster.
Four magazines with magazine pouch.
Tactical flashlight.
Concealment garb (vest, jacket, or sweatshirt).
300 rounds of ammunition.
Knee pads, tarp or poncho recommended.

Class Cost: $150 Per Module

Advanced Defensive Handgun Combatives- Module 1 Speed, Surprise and Violence of Action
This class is designed to teach the defensive concealed carry permit holder the skills required to decisively engage a threat and deal with the stress of a combat environment. The course will introduce the MSTT Threat Diamond defensive engagement model. The student will learn to increase the speed of their presentation from holster, perform tactical and emergency reloading, treat malfunctions, ambidextrous shooting, shooting one handed, increase trigger control, shooting to the sides and rear, and combat mindset. Force on Force drills will be used to reinforce the techniques and increase the pace of learning.

Advanced Defensive Handgun Combatives- Module 2 Zero to Ten Feet Fighting
This class is designed to teach the defensive concealed carry permit holder the skills required to decisively engage a threat and deal with the stress of a combat environment. The course will build upon the MSTT Threat Diamond defensive engagement model. The student will learn to deploy their defensive handgun from various unconventional positions from contact distances to ten feet. This class will develop the student’s ability to shoot while on the move using both hands equally. This is a highly dynamic course that emphasizes decision making, speed, unpredictability, and combat mindset. Force on Force drills will be used to reinforce the techniques and increase the pace of learning.

Advanced Defensive Handgun Combatives- Module 3 Ground Fighting and Vehicles
This class is designed to teach the defensive concealed carry permit holder the skills required to decisively engage a threat and deal with the stress of a combat environment. The course will build upon the MSTT Threat Diamond defensive engagement model. The student will learn to deploy their defensive handgun from various unconventional positions while on the ground and in or around vehicles. The student will learn vertical displacement as a tool for fighting around cover and reducing the probability of getting impacted during a fight. The student will also learn to protect a noncombatant using simple techniques derived from the executive protection industry. Force on Force drills will be used to reinforce the techniques and increase the pace of learning.

Advanced Defensive Handgun Combatives- Module 4 Structures and Low Light Fighting
This class is designed to teach the defensive concealed carry permit holder the skills required to decisively engage a threat and deal with the stress of a combat environment. The course will build upon the MSTT Threat Diamond defensive engagement model. The student will learn to deploy their defensive handgun from various unconventional positions while moving in a structure. This class will develop the student’s ability to use cover and concealment while making movement either outside or inside a structure. Emphasis will be placed on doors, corners, and objects typically found in an urban area. The student will learn to deploy their defensive handgun from various unconventional positions during low light conditions. Research has shown that most defensive engagements happen during nighttime or lowlight hours. The CCW carry permit holder must learn to use the cover of darkness to their advantage. The course emphasizes the use of the combat flashlight and displacement techniques to manage the environment. Force on Force drills will be used to reinforce the techniques and increase the pace of learning.

The Mean Streets Tactical Training cadre strive for a 2 to 1 student to instructor ratio so you get the best instruction possible. After completion of our training, students will have dramatically increased their shooting and threat assessment skills! Students will also have a detailed approach to continue their training on their own or in future courses.

Violence In Central Denver

Sometimes one of the best ways to manage a violent assault is to not be involved in the first place. We are seeing a dangerous trend of random violence in Denver. If you have to enter these areas of the city, stay in a high state of readiness. But if you don't have to go there, just stay out.

DENVER - FOX31 New has covered a disturbing series of attacks in Denver over the past two weeks.

First one man was attacked October 22, inside the 7-11 at 3rd and Broadway.

A week later, October 29, a couple, the wife pregnant and holding their one year old daughter, was assaulted as they left the Stapleton Walmart.

At 1 a.m. the next day, October 30th, another couple was violently attacked near 38th and I-25.

An hour and a half later, another couple was assaulted inside the Conoco convenience store at 295 S.Broadway.

And last Thursday, a man was attacked and beaten outside a nightclub at 10th and Broadway. Denver Police say they don't see a pattern.

But the victims do.

Each attack is completely random and unprovoked. There's no prior contact or connection between the suspects and the victims. Each attack begins with the suspects making vulgar and threatening sexual comments.

In two cases, the victims are gay, the other three involve a husband and wife. The suspects in each attack fit the same general description of three to six young black or black and Hispanic men.

The motive in each attack appears to be violence for the sake of violence. And each attack is in a very public place, in full view of witnesses and or security cameras. And the suspects do not appear to be concerned about getting caught.

Sometimes in life a situation occurs that forces you to act. The other day, one of our instructors received an email from an old friend. The email explained how his next door neighbor’s son was just killed in Afghanistan. We are all ex-soldiers ourselves and felt touched by the loss.

It was a race between the three of us to figure out how to do SOMETHING! We all felt a strong tie to this event. We each knew we had to make a contribution. We decided to do the only thing we knew we could do best, Teach.

MSTT is proud to announce our September 19th Tactical Rifle class will now be a Benefit to raise money for the Wounded Warrior Project. The http://www.woundedwarriorproject.org/ is a non for profit organization dedicated to the care of the soldiers who sustained injuries during battle. They provide support during their difficult transition from military to civilian life. Their mission statement is To Honor and Empower Wounded Warriors.

The Goal: Raise $2,000 for the Wounded Warrior Project!

The How: Recruit 10 students or more to attend our one day Tactical Rifle class. To enroll, simply email us at MeanStreetsTactical@hotmail.com or call us at (303) 838-4531 today.

The What: Each registerd participant will receive an Under Armour® Heat Gear® tactical training T-shirt with Wounded Warrior Project logo. Students will also receive a special “Mean Streets Tactical Training supports the Wounded Warrior Project” training certificate suitable for framing.

The Ten Commandments for Concealed Carry- Massad Ayoob outlines the imperatives of carrying a concealed pistol.

I’m not Moses, let alone God, but the following ten bits of advice are written in stone nonetheless. Not by God, but by the vastly powerful mechanisms of logic, law, and reality.

Commandment I: If you choose to carry, always carry, as much as is possible.
Hollywood actors get to see the script beforehand, and nothing is fired at them but blanks. You don’t have either luxury. Criminals attack people in times and places where they don’t think the victims will be prepared for them. It’s what they do. The only way to be prepared to ward off such predators is to always be prepared: i.e., to be routinely armed and constantly ready to respond to deadly threats against you and those who count on you for protection. It’s not about convenience, it’s literally about life and death.

Commandment II: Don’t carry a gun if you aren’t prepared to use it.
The gun is not a magic talisman that wards off evil. It is a special-purpose emergency rescue tool: no more, no less. History shows us that – for police, and for armed citizens alike – the mere drawing of the gun ends the great majority of criminal threats, with the offender either surrendering or running away. However, you must always remember that criminals constitute an armed subculture themselves, living in an underworld awash with stolen, illegal weapons. They don’t fear the gun: they fear the resolutely armed man or woman pointing that gun at them. And, being predators, they are expert judges of what is prey, and what is a creature more dangerous to them than they are to what they thought a moment ago was their prey.

Thus, the great irony: the person who is prepared to kill if they must to stop a murderous transgression by a human predator, is the person who is least likely to have to do so.

Commandment III: Don’t let the gun make you reckless.
Lightweight pseudo-psychologists will tell you that “the trigger will pull the finger,” and your possession of your gun will make you want to kill someone. Rubbish. The gun is no more an evil talisman that turns kindly Dr. Jekyll into evil Mr. Hyde, than it is a good talisman that drives off evil. Those of us who have spent decades immersed in the twin cultures of American law enforcement and the responsibly armed citizenry know that the truth is exactly the opposite. A good person doesn’t see the gun as a supercharger for aggression, but as brakes that control that natural human emotion. The law itself holds the armed individual to “a higher standard of care,” requiring that they do all that is possible to avoid using deadly force until it becomes clearly necessary. Prepare and act accordingly.

Commandment IV: Carry legally.
If you live someplace where there is no provision to carry a gun to protect yourself and your loved ones, don’t let pusillanimous politicians turn you into a convicted felon. Move! It’s a quality of life issue. Rhetorical theory that sounds like “I interpret the law this way, because I believe the law should be this way” – which ignores laws that aren’t that way – can sacrifice your freedom, your status as a gun-owning free American, and your ability to provide for your family. If you live where a CCW permit is available, get the damn permit. If you don’t, move to someplace that does. Yes, it IS that simple. And if you are traveling, check sources such as www.handgunlaw.us to make sure that you are legal to carry in the given jurisdiction. Don’t let the legal system make you a felon for living up to your responsibilities to protect yourself and those who count on you. If you carry, make sure you carry legally.

Commandment V: Know what you’re doing.
Gunfights are won by those who shoot fastest and straightest, and are usually measured in seconds. Legal aftermaths last for years, and emotional aftermaths, for lifetimes. Get educated in depth in the management of all three stages of the encounter beforehand.

Commandment VI: Concealed means concealed.
If your local license requires concealed carry, keep the gun truly concealed. The revealing of a concealed handgun is seen in many quarters as a threat, that can result in charges of Criminal Threatening, Brandishing, and more. A malevolent person who wants to falsely accuse you of threatening them with a gun will have their wrongful accusation bolstered if the police find you with a gun where they said it was. Yes, that happens. Some jurisdictions allow “open carry.” I support the right to open carry, in the proper time and place, but has found over the decades that there are relatively few ideal times or places where the practice won’t unnecessarily and predictably frighten someone the carrier had no reason to scare.

Commandment VII: Maximize your firearms familiarity.
If you ever need that gun, it will happen so quickly and terribly that you’ll have to be swift and sure. If you don’t, you’ll still be handling a deadly weapon in the presence of people you love. Making gun manipulation second nature – safety as well as draw-fire-hit – is thus doubly important.

Commandment VIII: Understand the fine points.
Don’t just read the headlines or editorials, read the fine print. Actually study the laws of your jurisdiction. What’s legal in one place, won’t be legal in another. Cities may have prohibitions that states don’t. Remember the principle, “ignorance of the law is no excuse.”

Commandment IX: Carry an adequate firearm.
A Vespa motor scooter is a motor vehicle, but it’s a poor excuse for a family car. A .22 or .25 is a firearm, but it’s a poor excuse for defense. Carry a gun loaded with ammunition that has a track record of quickly stopping lethal assaults. Hint: if your chosen caliber is not used by police or military, it’s probably not powerful enough for its intended purpose.

Commandment X: Use common sense.
Common sense—encompassing ethics and logic and law alike—must be your constant guide and companion when you carry a gun. Not idealism, not rhetoric. When you carry a gun, you literally carry the power of life and death. It is a power that belongs only in the hands of responsible people who care about consequences, and who are respectful of life and limb and human safety, that of others, and as well as their own.

MSTT Cold Steel for Hot Lead Program!

MSTT is pleased to announce our new Cold Steel for Hot Lead promotion for the 2010 shooting season! As you may have heard, MSTT is expanding our curriculum to include Tactical Rifle and Shotgun courses. To insure you get the best training and feedback possible, we need to expand a few of our training tools. What we need are a few good hardened steel rifle targets. We are looking for 6 really good 12”-24” square or circle shooting plates, large pepper poppers, or silhouette targets. Targets must be made out of Brinell 500-550 hardness steel or .223 and .308 rounds will burn right through them. Other shapes are acceptable as well if you have ideas.

These targets, if purchased from our recommended suppliers, should cost right about $200-300 depending on the model. These can also be manufactured locally by good metal smiths. Our offer is if you purchase a shooting steel prop for us, you will receive either a One Day Tactical Rifle course or One Day Tactical Handgun course, and any two Scenario days for free! That is a $300 value!

This offer is good for SIX shooters only! Once we get six, we shut the offer down.

The requirements for the targets are:
• Must be 500 Brinell hardness or better ½” armor plate steel
• Must be mobile and free standing and self resetting
• The target can hang on a rack or stand up but not require manual resetting

The Mean Streets Tactical Team wanted to reach out and say a huge thanks to all of you who came by our booth and showed your support! As all you current students know, we have been flying under the radar over the last 2 years. Historically it has only been the serious warriors who seek us out and come train at our school. But this year we decided we had more to offer than the “other guys” so we have taken a big step forward by getting a booth at the gun show for January and again in March. This show was a great success and resulted in us meeting some really good new shooters and seeing some good long time friends!

We met the typical Mean Streets people at the show. As always, those Sheepdogs who are serious about training find us while the sheep pass us by. We met SO many cool new folks! We met veteran CCW holders looking to improve their skills. We met folks who wanted to get their CCW but did not want to sit in a classroom filling up on coffee and donuts watching a “Death by PowerPoint” presentation. We met law enforcement officers looking to stay sharp, we met armed security officers looking for a tactical advantage. We had great discussions with ex-military warriors from Vietnam veterans to recently separated GIs who had multiple deployments to Iraq or Afghanistan under their belts. We met guys who wanted to train with us but were deploying next month and could not make it. All units and branches were represented from 82nd Airborne, 101st Airborne, Air Force PJ’s, SF guys, military Aviators, an Army intelligence operator who got blown up in an IED attack, Rangers, Security Police, Navy, Coast Guard, active or reserves, the list goes on and on. Service men and women, all seasoned operators, or ready to get back into the game after many years away from duty. We felt right at home with them all!

Also very exciting is the number of women who are seriously interested in getting training. The tactical shooting world is finally becoming filled with strong women who are empowering themselves to take control of their own personal protection. You guys better watch out, because these women can shoot and talk as much trash as we do! They are tired of playing seconds and are looking to gain skill, competence and confidence! Some are even willing to bring their husbands or significant others along so they can wax their butts in a group setting! We love it!

We were right next to our old buddies from Buffalo Creek Gun Club and you could feel the excitement for the new training season! This is going to be a great year for both of our organizations and help us to meet our goals. Our goal you ask? Our goal is to train the Mean Street 100. The Mean Street 100 is the one hundred new shooters we want to put through our school. 100 new warriors, 100 Sheepdogs, 100 experienced shooters who will take control of their own training and go farther than they ever thought possible. Sick and Tired of "Feel Good" Laws

Today I was reading the newspaper and saw a story about the Colorado State University administrators attempt to pass a gun ban on campus. Once again, the liberal left wing is attempting to lull themselves into a false sense of security by enacting "rules" that will keep the boogieman away. They believe that by putting into place this "strongly worded" memorandum, nothing bad will ever happen to them while on campus. The rules will make the CSU campus in Ft. Collins and Pueblo a safe zone where criminals will fear to tread. Hmmm, do YOU believe that?

So let's see if the logic behind their actions works in this scenario:

A 28 year old, mentally ill young man, hostile towards a young women, decides to launch a violent attack on the CSU campus. He is angry at several months of transgressions that he has deemed were levied against him by a young, attractive female student. He has tried to get her attention by talking with her, sending her notes and flowers, and offering to help her do her duties in the school chemistry lab. Each contact with her resulted in his being snubbed and not taken seriously by her. The last time she told him to leave her alone or she would get her boyfriend to come tell him to stop. Her BOYFRIEND!? Doesn't she know that HE is her boyfriend and this other guy is just using her! His hatred has eaten away at him until he can no longer tolerate her denial anymore. If she is not his, then she will not be with anyone...

So Mr. Hotblood loads up his dad's .357 Magnum and sticks it in his backpack. He knows she will be in the lab at 2:00 pm and figures he will ask her one more time to be his girl. If she does not accept his advance he will shoot her and her stupid boyfriend. Hell, while he is at it, he'll make them all pay. ALL OF THEM WILL PAY! He steps out of his car and fingers the gun in his pack. As he walks toward the lab he stops cold in his tracks... Oh NO, this campus has a gun ban and he is breaking the rules! Confused, he can't decide what to do. Go forth with his plan or possibly get in trouble with the campus adminstration. He isn't a student at the school but if he ever wanted to go there he might not be able to if he gets caught with his gun. He knows that his decision means he may lose her forever, but not wanting to violate the rules in the memo, he slowly turns around and walks away...

This is what the 3 monkeys in the CSU administration believe will happen. How about you, does this seem rational or realistic? I certainly don't. This logic is just plain screwed. In reality, the administrations rule can only infringe the rights of the LAW ABIDING CITIZIENS to protect themselves. You see, they want to include in the ban concealed carry permit holders weapons as well. The are in fact creating a safe zone but not the one they thought. They only created a safe zone for the bad guy because he KNOWS no one there will have the power to stop him. Crime is about POWER and a criminal with a weapon, unchecked, and unafraid has power in excess.

I would rather see him stroll onto campus, and instead of her becoming a victim, she draws her Glock 26 and places several controlled pairs into his thoracic cavity and stops the fight. No community mourning for the beautiful women slain by the madman, no network news coverage at 8:00 am for the entire country to see, no parents destroyed by the loss of their only daughter. Just one more scumbag piled up in a heap and no one to remember his name.

If CSU wants a "SAFE ZONE", then arm the entire student population. Let them carry tazers, mace , bowie knives, handguns, brass knuckles. Whatever makes them feel safe and protect themselves. Have an elective class for tactical handgun or self defense training, or give credit for concealed carry training. But instead, they will get to "Feel Good" about the fact that nothing bad will EVER happen to them while on campus. Yea, just tell that to the students at Virginia Tech, Auburn, UNC... Fortunatly there are a few level heads in the student body fighting back for their rights. I sure hope they get heard and not ignored by the hear no evil, see no evil, speak no evil liberals in charge.

Maybe it would be different if it were a group of gang members looking for a fight, or an islamic jihadist looking for martrdom, or maybe a serial killer stalking his next victim. I am sure they would stop and not act based on the memo. It certainly has not stopped criminals from acting out against all of our current feel good laws. But just maybe if we enact one more law...

Mean Streets Tactical Training is pleased to announce we have renewed our relationship with Buffalo Creek Gun Club to be our “home” range for our 2010 training courses! Buffalo Creek Gun Club is a premier rifle and handgun shooting facility near Bailey Colorado. Buffalo Creek Gun Club is an NRA recognized shooting events center and has held Colorado State Championship and National Championship Hi-power matches for decades.

The range has an interesting history and was previously named Camp Fickes. The old camp was a rifle training facility used by the Army starting in 1918. The range saw service men receving training in long distance shooting through World War II. After the war the camp was abandoned by the military until rediscovery in 1961. Today the Camp Fickes name has been brought back to life with a new range open to the public! Mean Streets Tactical Training is excited to announce our newest offering! Our instructors at MSTT are all ex-military. As such, we understand the operational environment that a soldier on the battlefield faces. We also understand that military budgets and resource limitations can sometimes short change the soldier’s training needs. Therefore we are pleased to announce reduced training rates for Active Duty military, National Guard, and Reservists!

Starting January 2010, all active duty soldier, National Guard, or Reservist will receive a 50% discount on their training if they pay for it themselves! We know that many military operators have to pay for their own training so we are here to support them the only way we know how: to provide excellent training to prepare them for their deployments.

Why would we do this?
MSTT feels it is of paramount importance for our men and women in the military to get good training. We know the military cannot always train soldiers in the environment needed to gain insight, confidence, and competence. The military ranges have so many rules and regulations that training can be unrealistic. Also, many units do not have the funds or ammunition to conduct the live fire exercises that soldiers require. At MSTT, we train soldiers the tactical fundamentals required to operate their weapons with speed and accuracy. We conduct our training in an all day live fire course designed to familiarize the warrior with their weapon and gear. The shooters can evaluate their gear placement, perform drills to reinforce the fundamentals of tactical shooting, and practice tactical movement in scenarios designed to stress them. We also work on treating malfunctions, weapons maintenance, stress fire, and many topics a soldier may never see in their normal training.

What if my Unit would like trained?
If you are a military leader who wants your unit trained, all you need to do is contact one of our staff ASAP! We will provide a custom training proposal and will come out and present our services to your command staff. Our group prices are extremely affordable and in many cases easier to get approval for than going to the military ranges. If you want us to come to your military range for training, our entire course is mobile. We come out with all our own stands, barricades, drills, and range control equipment. All you need to provide is the weapons and ammunition. We will provide everything else. MSTT’s Cadre understand the needs of the training NCO’s and officers. We speak your language and can operate in your environment. We want to be your primary provider of combat arms training for your teams!

What classes should we take?
We conduct courses in Tactical Rifle (M4 carbine and AK-47/74 platforms), pistol, and tactical scenarios. We recommend a 3 day unit training that includes a day of each system and a combined skills day.

For individual operators training on their own, we recommend our One Day Tactical Rifle class and our One Day Defensive Handgun Skills course. Follow that up with a Advanced Defensive handgun Skills class and a few Tactical Scenario days to reinforce your skills.

What if I am retired military?

We are reserving this offer for those warriors who are still in and have the potencial to deploy to one of the world's hot spots. We appreciate greatly the retired warriors contributions to our national security and freedom. TRAINING- It is not an Event, It is a Process

When it comes to developing skill at arms, a true warrior must train diligently for years on end. The warrior evaluates honestly their current personal ability and repeatedly tests themselves to uncover weakness. A weakness discovered is not considered a problem, but an opportunity to learn something new and increase ability and survival. When it comes to the skills required of a modern warrior, there are many that must be worked on to achieve true proficiency: shooting, movement, vision, heart rate control, hand to hand, knives, sticks, etc. Each discipline must be carefully studied, practiced, evaluated, and tested in a realistic setting. Our motto is to Train Like You Fight and you will Fight Like You Trained!

Consideration must also be given to the fact that fighting skills are PERISHABLE skills. What this means is that you may tune up on presentation from the holster today, but by tomorrow your skills will begin to degrade. Eventually you will end up back where you started. A Samurai does not get to Master’s Level by taking a 3 hour sword fighting clinic, they train endlessly. The Samurai also needs to know movement, kicking, punching, morality and ethics (Bushido Code), and many other skills than just sword play.

So how does this relate to today’s modern warriors such as you? It means to train hard and often. It also means not just learning one way to do something, but to learn from other teachers. Take what you like best and incorporate it into your drills program. It means take classes frequently and then dry practice what you have learned. The responsibility to take your skills to the next level is yours and not your course instructors. They will certainly lay the foundation, but it is YOU that really makes the difference. It also means to step outside of your comfort zone and try new things. A great example came last year when one of our returning students came back and took a course he had already taken. Except this time, he shot the entire class weak handed! Holster, tactical reloads, everything was backwards from his normal shooting style. Of course he was slower and it required more effort. But what an example of taking his training seriously!

At MSTT, we strive to give you all the tools required to take your training to the next level. We will lay the foundation by using fundamentals drills, stress fire, and competition to reinforce the skills presented. But after the class, we want you to continue to train. Come back for more, shoot in competitions, take classes with other instructors, but take it seriously. We certainly hope you come back and train a couple times of year with us. We have seen repeat students make HUGE strides in their gun handling and decision making. We have seen them go from rookies to making incredible first shot hits from the holster in a tactical scenario that they never would have imagined months before! We have seen both confidence and competence grow with each repeat class.

We welcome you to challenge yourself and remember to keep training. With us or not, keep learning, keep working, keep training.

The Story of Iron Mike

Leading the fight is U S Marine Gunnery Sgt. Michael Burghardt, known as 'Iron Mike' or just 'Gunny'. He is on his third tour in Iraq . He had become a legend in the bomb disposal world after winning the Bronze Star for disabling 64 IEDs and destroying 1,548 pieces of ordnance during his second tour.

Then, on September 19, he got blown up. He had arrived at a chaotic scene after a bomb had killed four US Marines. He chose not to wear the bulky bomb protection suit. 'You can't react to any sniper fire and you get tunnel-vision,' he explains. So, protected by just a helmet and standard-issue flak jacket, he began what bomb disposal officers term 'the longest walk', stepping gingerly into a 5 foot deep and 8 foot wide crater.

The earth shifted slightly and he saw a Senao base station with a wire leading from it. He cut the wire and used his 7 inch knife to probe the ground. 'I found a piece of red detonating cord between my legs,' he says. 'That's when I knew I was screwed.' Realizing he had been sucked into a trap, Sgt Burghardt , 35, yelled at everyone to stay back. At that moment, an insurgent, probably watching through binoculars, pressed a button on his mobile phone to detonate the secondary device below the sergeant's feet 'A chill went up the back of my neck and then the bomb exploded,' he recalls. 'As I was in the air I remember thinking, 'I don't believe they got me...' I was just ticked off they were able to do it. Then I was lying on the road, not able to feel anything from the waist down.'

His fellow Marines cut off his trousers to see how badly he was hurt. None could believe his legs were still there 'My dad's a Vietnam vet who's paralyzed from the waist down,' says Sgt Burghardt . 'I was lying there thinking I didn't want to be in a wheelchair next to my dad and for him to see me like that. They started to cut away my pants and I felt a real sharp pain and blood trickling down. Then I wiggled my toes and I thought, 'Good, I'm in business.' As a stretcher was brought over, adrenaline and anger kicked in. 'I decided to walk to the helicopter. I wasn't going to let my team-mates see me being carried away on a stretcher.' He stood and gave the insurgents who had blown him up a one-fingered salute. 'I flipped them one.. It was like, 'OK, I lost that round but I'll be back next week.'

Copies of a photograph depicting his defiance, taken by Jeff Bundy for the Omaha World-Herald, adorn the walls of homes across America and that of Col John Gronski, the brigade commander in Ramadi, who has hailed the image as an exemplar of the warrior spirit.

Sgt Burghardt's injuries - burns and wounds to his legs and buttocks - kept him off duty for nearly a month and could have earned him a ticket home. But, like his father - who was awarded a Bronze Star and three Purple Hearts for being wounded in action in Vietnam - he stayed in Ramadi to engage in the battle against insurgents who are forever coming up with more ingenious ways of killing Americans.

Lewis L. Millett, 88, a career Army officer who was briefly and somewhat misleadingly court-martialed for desertion during World War II and went on to receive the Medal of Honor for leading a bayonet charge during the Korean War, died Nov. 14 at a veterans hospital in Loma Linda, Calif. He had congestive heart failure.

Col. Millett, who sported a red handlebar mustache, cut an audacious and unconventional path during his 35 years of military service. He led daring attacks in two wars and was instrumental in starting a reconnaissance commando school to train small units for covert operations in Vietnam.
He also was an Army deserter. He later said he had been so eager to "help fight fascism and Hitler" that he left an Air Corps gunnery school in mid-1941 -- months before the U.S. entry into World War II -- to enlist with the Canadian army and go overseas. He manned an antiaircraft gun during the London blitz before rejoining the U.S. Army, which had by that time declared war and apparently was not being overly meticulous in its background checks.

As an antitank gunner in Tunisia, he earned the Silver Star after he jumped into a burning ammunition-filled halftrack, drove it away from allied soldiers and leapt to safety just before the vehicle exploded. Not long after, he shot down a German Messerschmitt Me-109 fighter that was strafing Allied troops. Col. Millett, who was firing from machine guns mounted on a halftrack, hit the pilot through the windshield.

He had fought his way through Italy, participating in the campaigns at Salerno and Anzio, when his paperwork caught up with him. A superior officer told him that he was being court-martialed for his desertion to Canada and that his punishment was $52. He also received a battlefield promotion for fearlessness in combat.

His letters back home were unfiltered epithets aimed at the chain of command. "Letters were censored in World War II, and the next thing I knew I was standing before the battery commander," he told the journal Military History. "He told me that the War Department had ordered three times that I be court-martialed. They finally did it to prevent someone from really throwing the book at me later. Then a few weeks later they made me a second lieutenant! I must be the only Regular Army colonel who has ever been court-martialed and convicted of desertion."
During the Korean War, he received the military's highest awards for valor, including the Medal of Honor and the Distinguished Service Cross, for two bayonet charges he led as a company commander in February 1951.

"We had acquired some Chinese documents stating that Americans were afraid of hand-to-hand fighting and cold steel," he told Military History. "When I read that, I thought, 'I'll show you, you sons of bitches!' "

He was awarded the Medal of Honor for leading a charge up Hill 180 near Soam-Ni on Feb. 7. When one of his platoons was pinned down by heavy fire, he placed himself at the head of two other platoons and ordered the men to charge up the hill.

According to his Medal of Honor citation, he bayoneted several enemy soldiers and lobbed grenades in their direction while rallying his men to fight. Grenade fragments pierced Col. Millett's shin, but he refused medical evacuation.

"Despite vicious opposing fire, the whirlwind hand-to-hand assault carried to the crest of the hill," the Medal of Honor citation read. "His dauntless leadership and personal courage so inspired his men that they stormed into the hostile position and used their bayonets with such lethal effect that the enemy fled in wild disorder."

Charles H. Cureton, director of Army museums at the U.S. Army Center of Military History, said that

Col. Millett's intimidating, close-combat bayonet charge was "very unusual. By the time you get to the Second World War, the range of lethality of weapons is such that a bayonet charge is very hazardous."

Lewis Lee Millett was born Dec. 15, 1920, in Mechanic Falls, Maine, and grew up with his mother in South Dartmouth, Mass., after his parents divorced. After his Korean War service, he went through Ranger training at Fort Benning, Ga., and was assigned to the 101st Airborne Division as an intelligence officer. He later was sent to Vietnam as a military adviser to a controversial intelligence program called Phoenix, which killed thousands of suspected Viet Cong and their sympathizers in an effort to destroy the Viet Cong infrastructure in towns and villages.

He said he retired in 1973 because he was convinced that the United States had "quit" in Vietnam. He championed the return of U.S. prisoners of war from Vietnam and then worked as a deputy sheriff in Trenton, Tenn., before settling in the San Jacinto Mountains resort village of Idyllwild, Calif., across the street from an American Legion post.

His first marriage, to the former Virginia Young, ended in divorce. His second wife, Winona Williams Millett, died in 1993. Survivors include three children from his second marriage, L. Lee Millett Jr. and Timothy Millett, both of Idyllwild, and Elizabeth Millett of Nevada; three sisters; a brother; and four grandchildren.

A son from his second marriage, Army Staff Sgt. John Millett, died in the 1985 airplane crash in Gander, Newfoundland, that killed more than 240 U.S. service members returning from a peacekeeping mission in the Middle East.

Reflecting on his career, Col. Millett once told an interviewer: "I believe in freedom, I believe deeply in it. I've fought in three wars, and volunteered for all of them, because I believed as a free man, that it was my duty to help those under the attack of tyranny. Just as simple as that.

Mean Streets Tactical Training will offer several new courses that will increase your competency level across a wider array of weapons systems and to a much deeper level than ever before. Of course we will still offer our renowned Tactical Handgun classes for those who want to experience the stress filled world of concealed carry or just learn to be a safer shooter. We will hold our popular Women’s Only Handgun class again and bring the girls skill level up above most men they will encounter at the range! For you serious Warriors, we are upgrading our Advanced Gun Fighting course to push you farther than you would on your own. We also have a couple new courses under development that will rock your training world! Look for future releases on offerings as the winter progresses! We are also going to introduce our “Military Warrior Stimulus Plan”. As you all know, the Democrats control the government and with that brings some real problems for our soldiers in uniform. From personal experience, we have lived through the massive budget cuts that occurred to the military budgets during the Clinton years. Those cuts are going to be minor compared to what Obama and his merry band of financial marauders are pushing through right now! We have seen Military and Special Ops budgets shrink dramatically already and that results in less training for our warriors deploying to battle. THIS WILL NOT STAND if we have anything to do with it! So, all active duty or National Guard soldiers will receive 50% off any handgun course and special low pricing on all of our new course offerings. It is more important to us to properly train our troops than to make money. So spread the word that in 2010, MSTT will give back to our warrior community and train these soldiers to win! Veteran's Day

As veteran’s day nears, my thoughts wander to our American service men and women who are fighting and dying on foreign soil. More recently, some of our soldiers were killed by an Islamic terrorist here at home while in garrison. These soldiers swore an oath to our constitution to defend our country from enemies both foreign and domestic. Unfortunately, sometimes that oath requires the ultimate sacrifice of a soldier’s life.

Today, Michelle and I rode our motorcycles down to pay our respects to one such soldier who gave it all on the field of battle. Danny Dietz. Petty Officer 2nd Class Dietz was a 25 year old Navy Seal who epitomized honor, duty, and valor on the battlefield. Wounded seriously 5 times, Danny fought hard to protect the lives of his three teammates during an intense gunfight in Afghanistan in June of 2005. His injuries were so severe that no one would have blamed him for not continuing to pour out precision fire into the enemy’s ranks. But he did. He kept fighting with the complete and total selflessness of someone who cares deeply about his teammates above himself. His story is documented in Marcus Luttrell’s book Lone Survivor. Danny and the rest of his SEAL team’s story is shocking and amazing and should be required reading of every American. It shows the level of sacrifice our warriors put out every day.

Danny is from Littleton, Colorado and a local artist was so moved by his story he created a bronze sculpture to honor his sacrifice. The monument is moving and emotional to stand next to. Today, Michelle and I were the only ones there to view his memorial. But we weren’t the first. Many had come by and placed something on the monument in thanks. The cool breeze was blowing dried up leaves across the grass. Cars would cruise by with the drivers oblivious to the soldier whose gaze will stare forward into eternity, on guard, preventing them from harm. His posture in the statue is strong, head up, eyes forward as if scanning for threats. His jaw is set with fierce determination. His hands cradle his weapon like a craftsman’s tool. It is an amazing work of art.

But it is more than a statue honoring one soldier. It stands for the thousands of men and women who have stepped willingly into harms way and been wounded or killed to protect our freedoms and America’s interests. Every city in our great country should have one of these statues of a local hero who gave it all. But they don’t. This one almost didn’t get built because the local parents and neighbors thought it was bad form to place a statue of a soldier holding his weapon so near a school. Their ignorance and focus was on the gun, not the story of heroism. But justice and honor prevailed and this monument to courage was permanently fixed in place.

I urge you all to take the drive one afternoon to Berry Park in Littleton and spend some time with Danny. Think about the freedoms you have and the life you are able to lead in our Republic. Realize just how precious our freedoms are and how many are trying to tear them down. Set your own moral compass toward protection of our constitution, supporting our soldiers, and electing politicians who are just and honest and who will fight to protect what so many have given up to build. The cost of freedom is not paid in a stimulus bill, it is paid for in blood. The blood of an American soldier who may or may not “believe” in the battles they are asked to fight. The blood of American citizens who VOLUNTEER to protect you while you sleep comfortably in your bed, spend time with your family, and chase your career. The blood of your neighbor, relative, co-worker, or total stranger. These soldiers allow you to be a conservative or liberal, democrat or republican, activists or non-activists, to start your own business, and control your own destiny. They allow you to lead YOUR life the way YOU want to lead it.
This year, take a minute and support someone who fought for you by making a donation to any fine soldier supporting agency such as Wounded Warrior Project (http://www.woundedwarriorproject.org/) or the USO (https://www.uso.org/) . You can even reach out and organize a package delivery to any soldier in any theater of battle (http://adoptaplatoon.org/site/). But most of all, simply don’t forget them this veteran’s day.

Why Mean Streets Tactical Training?

A lot of folks ask themselves or us this question when we are discussing firearms and training. The reality is, most people spend a considerable amount of money on quality weapons systems, customization, and tactical gear. They go buy the latest and greatest blaster, get the trigger redone, have the slide de-burred, put on new Hogue grips, etc. In the AR15 world, your gear is apparently an extension of your individuality and an opportunity to show up your shooting buddies. However, most people who shoot their entire life, never spend any money on themselves and increasing their abilities.

Imagine a skydiver who goes out and buys the latest high speed parachute setup, a new flying suit, that nice big altimeter, and doesn’t go to a skydiving training class. Or maybe he goes and takes a 3 hour lecture on skydiving in a classroom and someone then says he is "qualified". Seems pretty stupid doesn’t it? But that is what we are seeing in the CCW training world right now.

What we are seeing is a trend of ordinary people going out and getting their Concealed Carry permits and actively taking a role in defending themselves. We at MSTT strongly believe a heavily armed society is a polite society and we applaud those who take that first step in personal responsibility. But that being said, many of these good upstanding citizens have no idea how to properly employ the weapon they have decided to carry. Or, some actually realize that so they just don’t carry. No weapon isn’t a good situation to be in when facing a potentially armed conflict!

At MSTT, we aim to introduce these future warriors into the world of combative tactics and skills. There are many schools out there and all offer something different. You can choose the introductory NRA classes which are a great way for beginning shooters to learn basic and fundamental firearms skills and safety. We can teach the NRA Basic Pistol class to those who need it. Or you can go to a civilian commando school that will teach you to shoot “Just like a Navy SEAL”. Of course, plain clothes concealed carry is not really the environment most SEALS train for! Most ATM burglaries don’t happen in the North Atlantic Ocean on an oil rig at night…

At MSTT, we want students to build a solid foundation from open carry to the introduction of concealed carry. We want to have you trained on solid fundamentals learned through lots of shooting and challenging exercises and drills. We believe in training like you fight so you will fight like you trained. Under stress you will only be 50% as good as your best day on the range. So train for the environment you will fight in and make every training session count! We want you to train with your carry gun and normal concealment garb. We also want you to have fun, be safe, and come away having given careful consideration to what being in an armed conflict would be like and seeing how you would react. In our experience, you can NEVER stop learning! We also realize that training does not need to break your bank account (your AR-15 will do that for you!).

Mean Streets Tactical Training- Scenario Day Update: Sunday August 23rd

OK all you high speed, low drag, cap busters. It’s time for the Scenario day!

This event is all about shooting and moving, engaging multiple threats, relentless attention to fundamentals, and having a good time blazing away! We’ll start off with some refresher drills to get you tuned up. Then, we’ll get into the scenarios. There is no set agenda for the scenarios; you can shoot them as many times as you want until you got them dialed. I’ll be shooting video for instant feedback.

You can also bring other weapons systems if you like, AR’s, AK’s, Tactical Shotguns, etc. For the saving of ammo’s sake, you can shoot everything with your trusty .22LR if you like. Shooting is shooting, as long as you are doing it right and training hard. Remember to train like you fight. Someday you might need to save the world from a Zombie invasion and you need all your skills tuned up and ready to rock.

So, what do you need to bring:
* Blaster of choice with holster and mag pounches. As many mags as you have (you will be required to Tac Reload a lot). FYI- Emergency Reloaders will be humiliated in public!!!!
* Combat mindset with an itchy trigger finger.
* Read Lone Survivor prior to showing up.
* At least 150 rounds, the more the better but it is up to you on how much you want to shoot. I’d bring 2,000+ if it were me…Hey, what if Zombies attack? You might need lots of ammo…
* Required safety gear: safety glasses, ear protection, hat with a brim.
* Optional equipment: knee pads, elbow pads, gloves, tactical vests, howitzer, C-130 Spectra Gunship, etc. FYI- Man-packable Tactical Nukes not allowed.
* Water, lunch, snacks, lawn chair, and snivel gear (last time out it rained on us for hours!) This is Colorado, be prepared for everything.

MSTT is pleased to announce our latest offering! Our new One Day Tactical Scenario Clinic will take your shooting to the next level by reinforcing the fundamentals of tactical engagements in a challenging and tough series of realistic scenarios.

The day starts off with a review of tactical shooting fundamentals to include:

We then place students into stress fire situations and force them to think, react appropriately, and engage targets in tactical order. Mean Streets Tactical Training Selects Buffalo Creek Gun Club as a training partner!

Mean Street Tactical Training is pleased to announce a new strategic partnership with Buffalo Creek Gun Club! Buffalo Creek Gun Club has completed construction on a new 25-100 yard handgun and rifle facility which is now open to the public. MSTT has selected this range as our new “home” range for training. Our scheduled events will be held at this facility near the historic town of Buffalo Creek on Colorado Hwy 126. MSTT will still offer training at your location if you require with our completely mobile training hardware.

The new shooting range, named Camp Fickes, is a historic military training center. Established by the US Army in 1918 as a rifle training facility, it has housed the nation’s best shooters since World War I. After WWII the range was abandoned and lost to the country. In the 1960’s the range was rediscovered by what became the Buffalo Creek Gun Club of today and renovated. Today, the range is home to a 600 yard range that hosts NRA national Hi-Power rifle matches and seminars as well as the new 100 yard range.

Advanced Defensive Handgun Skills Course

Mean Streets Tactical Training is proud to present our one day Advanced Defensive Handgun Skills course. Warriors know that if you train like you fight, you will fight like you train. Therefore the Warrior will make every training session count. This is one of those sessions that Warriors will relish in!

This one day training class prepares students for the down and dirty world of urban combat. The course emphasizes that the skills used in an armed conflict are different than those used punching holes in paper plates or beer cans: beer cans don’t shoot back. Statistics show that those with a Will to Win at all costs, and a high state of readiness, survive conflict situations.

This class will focus on the following Knowledge, Skills, and Attitude:
Combat Mindset and the Warrior Spirit
Tactical Movement
Combat Shooting Fundamentals
Treating Malfunctions
Target scanning and decision making
Precision tactical shooting under stress
Ground fighting
Fighting to the Sides and Rear
Close Quarters Engagements

The class will use a series of skill builder drills, combined with scenarios and stress inducement to replicate the tactical fighting environment. All exercises are trained from concealed carry for realism. Students will come away from the training with a much higher confidence and competence level and take their preparedness to a new level.

Course Requirements:
Previous Defensive Handgun training from MSTT or equivalent
Student must be able to demonstrate on demand the fundamental skills such as presentation from holster, proper use of the front sight, and tactical reloading.
Combat handgun of choice with Kydex or equivalent holster.
Four magazines with magazine pouch.
Tactical flashlight.
Concealment garb (vest, jacket, or sweatshirt).
300 rounds of ammunition.
Knee pads, tarp or poncho reccomended.

The Mean Streets Tactical Training cadre strive for a 2 to 1 student to instructor ratio so you get the best instruction possible. After completion of our training, students will have dramatically increased their shooting and threat assessment skills! Students will also have a detailed approach to continue their training on their own or in future courses.

April 26th Class Pics- Tactical Handgun Course

The latest MSTT Tactical Handgun course was a great success! We had 11 shooters and a full agenda of skills drills and challenging scenarios. Each shooter progressed amazingly during the courses of fire! Students worked thier way dilligently through drills on Grip and Stance, Trigger Control, Tactical reloading, and Presentation from the holster. With each training evolution the students got better and faster. Soon they progressed to some very tough Man-on-Man competitions to reinforce fundamental skills. There was some REALLY good shooting going on. I'd hate to meet these Warriors on the Mean Streets! They are ready, are YOU?

Mark "Sniper" Wilson
Mark Wilson joined the US Marine Corps in November of 1976 and was recruited into Naval Intelligence while completing boot camp. During his tenure Mark spent 3 years working at various locations throughout the Pacific. In addition to his regular duties, Mark served as a primary marksmanship instructor for both handguns and assault rifles, participated in inter-service combat pistol matches, and competed in Admirals Cup Rifle competitions around the Pacific. Mark later served with a Direct Support Reaction team supporting NATO operations in the Atlantic theater. After leaving the Marines in late 1981 Mark was a simple college student and recreational shooter while still doing some competitive rifle shooting. In 1988 Mark joined the 19th SFGA and was soon functioning as the Platoon Sergeant for the Military Intelligence Detachment. After completing Airborne School Mark became a detachment sergeant for one the newly formed SOTA’s (Support Operations Team Alpha). Mark served in this capacity through his EAS in 1994.

In addition to extensive military training at home Mark has worked and trained with soldiers from England, Germany, Japan, Mexico, Norway, Panama and Thailand. He has also completed tactical handgun training at some of the premier shooting destinations in America to include Front Sight defensive handgun, Valhalla’s Combat Focused shooting course and other competitive venues. Mark enjoys teaching and sharing knowledge gained through experience. Apart from teaching shooting skills, Mark is a certified Scuba Instructor and avid diver.

Tim "Top Fueler" Buhler
Tim Buhler joined the US Army in 1986 and served in the 2nd BN, 187th Infantry, 101st Airborne Division. While at Fort Campbell, he completed the US Army Air Assault School, and qualified expert with the M-16 service rifle, M-203 grenade launcher, M249 SAW (Squad Assault Weapon), and M-60 Machine gun. In 1989, Tim joined up with the 19th Special Forces Group Airborne at Camp George West in Golden Colorado. There he served as an Intelligence Analyst supporting SF teams deploying on missions around the world and was the team leader for the new MI Detachment's All Source Production Section. In 1989, he completed the US Army Airborne School at Ft. Benning. In 1990, Tim won the Leadership Award at the Primary Leadership Development course at Camp Williams Utah. In 1991, Tim transferred out of the 5/19th SF to a role as primary instructor for the Reserve Basic Non-Commissioned Officers Course (BNCC) at Fitzsimons Army Medical Center with the 5046th USAR School. Tim's training specialty was battlefield communications, the intelligence cycle, land navigation, and combat focussed leadership.

In the early 1990's, Tim began competing in Combat and Defensive handgun matches, IDPA, IPSC matches, 3-Gun matches, and learning world class techniques from some of the best in the industry. He has trained at Front Sight multiple times and with Gabe Suarez.

Tim is an NRA certified Instructor for NRA Personal Protection in the Home, NRA Basic Pistol, and NRA Fireams in the Home courses.

In addition to shooting, Tim is an avid motorcycle racer and adventurer. He has competed in the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb six times, raced the Tuareg Rally in Spain and Morocco in north Africa, dirt tracked, ice raced, and road raced. Tim particularly enjoys adventure traveling in the Utah desert, Baja, and the high country passes of Colorado. Tim spends his four wheeled time with his wife and dogs exploring in their Wrangler Rubicon Unlimted expedition vehicle.

Mike "Snake" Pivacek
Mike Pivacek joined the United States Air Force in 1975 serving as an Operations Intelligence Specialist specializing in counter-insurgency/counter intelligence. During his 4 year career he specialized in intelligence and operations in the Central American and Southeast Asian theatres training in irregular (guerilla) warfare movements and operations to counteract them. In 1987 Mike rejoined the military when he enlisted in the United States Army and became a member of the 87th Infantry Division as a light weapons infantryman specializing in the M60 machine gun and the M203 grenade launcher both of which he qualified expert. After attending the jungle warfare school in Panama, Mike moved to the 19th Special Forces Group where he met Mark and Tim and their lifelong competition began.

Mike has trained at the Boulder Rifle Club, Front Sight, Valhalla, with Ron Avery at the Practical Shooting Academy and with John Farnham at Defense Training International. In addition to his training in skill at arms, Mike is a practitioner of Krav Maga a practically-oriented Israeli martial art used by the Israeli Mossad, United States law enforcement teams, and Special Operations units.

Mike is an avid hunter/adventurer with hunts in Texas, Alaska, Zimbabwe, and Tanzania. Mike’s successful adventure hunts include Bear, Lion, Kudu, Impala, Bush pig, several trophy Cape Buffalos, and an unbelievable African crocodile.

MSTT One Day Tactical Handgun Class April 26th- Details

Hello shooters,

I wanted to give you the details for the one day tactical handgun class on April 26th. Just to let you know we still have slots available so if you have any buddies who shoot or carry concealed, let’s get them signed up ASAP! We had several cancellations recently so we have plenty of room in the class.

Meeting Time and Location:
Meet at 8:30 at Pine Junction on Hwy 285. We meet in the parking lot of the Pine Country Store at the intersection of Hwy 285 and Hwy 126. Please look for Tim (he will be in his jeep and have that distinctive high-speed, low drag paratrooper look going on). Mark and Mike will be at the site doing the initial setup. If you are lost or late contact Tim at 303-748-0037 (mobile). We will caravan as a group to the shooting location.

Directions From Denver at C-470 and Hwy 285.
Take Hwy 285 South for 22 miles to the intersection of Hwy 285 and Hwy 126. This is Pine Junction. Rendezvous at the Pine Country Store on the north east corner of Pine Junction at 0830 hrs (8:30 AM for all you civilians who can't tell time). Look for the desert colored Jeep Rubicon parked awaiting the shooters. Ask for Top Fueler Buhler. We will convoy together to DZ Pine.

Take Hwy 126 South approx 15 miles. The location is on the right side of the road approx 9 miles past the town of Pine Grove and 5 miles past the town of Buffalo Creek. On top of the hill is a long straight away. Continue past the turn off for Buffalo Creek Road and Wellington Lake. The shooting area will be the 2nd pull off on your right. Shooting starts around 0900 hrs.

What to Bring:
Personal handgun of choice- it’s not what you shoot but how you shoot it.
Holster- preferably Kydex plastic or tactical nylon in an outside of the pants configuration. Leather is fine but avoid drop holsters.
Spare magazine(s) and pouch(s)- Four mags would be best but bring whatever you have.
400 rounds of ammunition- or as many as you can find these days!
Eye/Ear protection- safety glasses with ear plugs or muffs.
Lunch and water for yourself.
Hat with a brim- not required but recommended to keep hot brass from getting between your safety glasses and eyes.

How to Pay for your class:

You should have been notified as to your price for the class, if not let me know. The CCW signoff is an additional $50. If you want the CCW packet and have not notified us, PLEASE do so ASAP so we bring enough packets.

Highway named after War Hero Danny Dietz

MSTT Womens Only Class- April 5th!

Mean Streets Tactical Training is pleased to announce our Women only course on April 5th, 2009. MSTT’s Intro to Tactical Handgun is a one day class designed to take both novice and experienced shooters from the basics to advanced shooting techniques. Students start with the foundational skills of firearms safety and proper gun handling. Hands on drills will be used to learn loading/unloading, body position, grip, and front sight focus. As the day progresses, the shooters learn more advanced techniques such as tactical reloading, presentation from the holster, and shooting while moving. The class finishes with concealed carry and fun tactical scenarios and exercises designed to reinforce the skills learned throughout the day in a friendly noncompetitive environment. All skills and drills are performed on the range while shooting and not in a classroom.

Our Intro to Tactical Handgun is taught in an easy going yet highly controlled and safe environment. Because no men are allowed, students will not have to compete in a testosterone laced situation! Shooters can take the time to learn the skills in a small class size and with maximum personal attention from our instructors. The MSTT staff has the patience to work through issues together with our students to make sure they learn completely and build confidence. The focus of the training is on smooth and correct actions leading to accuracy.

Course cost is $175 for the day. Training requirements are handgun, holster, large leather belt, magazine pouches with extra magazines, 300 rounds of ammunition (and you will use them all), safety glasses, and hearing protection. All calibers of handgun can be used in the class from .22 rim fire to .45 ACP. If you do not have your own handgun, email our Staff and we will try to find one for you. Be prepared for all weather conditions as our training happens outside and in all environments!

MSTT- Tactical Shoot Challenge

Today we completed our first Tactical Shoot Challenge program. Our shooters were challenged with a battery of skill builder drills and then some dynamic scenario based training. The event was timed and scored with one victor coming out on top! The scenarios were tough, forced the shooters to think, scan, and make decisions, and then focus hard on the front sight to make accurate hits. Time pressure, man-on-man competition, and tough physical positions were introduced time after time. The courses of fire were named: Trail of Tears, Shoot and Scoot, Double Double, Sit and Spin, and the Steel Challenge.

The instructors were right there to coach, force the shooters to do it right, not cheat themselves, and keep the combat focus high!

After completion of our training, students will have dramatically increased their shooting and threat assessment skills! Students will also have a detailed approach to continue their training on their own or in future courses.
